In just an hour (6 pm edt), State Senator Regina Thomas will be here to answer questions and talk to us about why she's running for Congress.
Before that, I want to introduce her to the EENRblog community and let you know why I personally support her candidacy. [note: this is a personal endorsement rather than an announcement by EENRblog at this time.]
Here's a quote from Senator Thomas -- it explains exactly why I support this amazing woman from my home town:
"This country was built on the backs and at the hands and sacrifices of working-class people. My voting record is 100% for working families. To see what this country is doing to families and the working-class is an abomination. Outsourcing our jobs to foreign nations-- taking food out of the mouths of our children can not and should not be tolerated. This is the very fact that nothing will be done to bring the jobs back to America. With the national deficit being so high we do not even own America. IT IS TIME TO TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK!"
First check out this ad for Regina Thomas- the Challenger in this primary
Barack Obama endorsed Bush Dog John Barrow and cut an ad for him in his primary contest against State Senator Regina Thomas. There has been a lot of criticism of this action. From a political standpoint I can see why Obama may have acted. Recent polls show that Georgia is in play and helping Barrow can help him.
I think the race itself should be the real issue and the fascination of this contest.
This is an interesting seat considering the history of how the seat was created and how Barrow has come to occupy this seat.
Political legend has it this seat was created for Champ Walker, an African American in 2002. Walker ran an abomination of a capmpaign and had ethical problems. I think a DUI and maybe an alleged rape charge. Max Burns, a Georgia Southern, professor won the election. This was a targeted DCCC race in 2004 and Barrow won with Athens his home base carrying him through. This seat has 40% African American populaton. The seat was re-drawn in attempt to get rid of Barrow and Jim Marshall another Blue Dog.
Barrow had to move to Savannah and beat Burns in the narrowest of margins in any race with a Dem incumbent.
Barrow votes lock step with Bush on tax cuts and the War in Iraq.
Now, I'm still supporting Obama, But I'm not with him in this race. I think we've got to go with the more progressive candidate like we did with Edwards in Maryland.
I've just started an act blue page for Thomas - Donate here Even if Thomas doesn't win a contest could put Barrow in check. I haven't even seen any numbers in this race.
