Hello, this is Charlie

by: Charlie Brown for Congress

Mon Mar 24, 2008 at 20:16:23 PM EDT

( - promoted by sarahlane)

It's nice to see the rules:  'Be excellent to each other... or else'
Wouldn't it be nice if that was the only rule we needed.
It was great to wake up this morning and see that I won the Vote Vets online poll.  My thanks to Rocky and all the other members of the netroots who voted for me in the Vote Vets poll, and who voted for me last year in the DFA Allstar poll.
Time to get our message out that it is time to hold politicians accountable.  To elect people to public office that believe in solving problems rather than creating them. Partisan politics and sound bytes are dividing us.
Should be an interesting couple hours online.  I'll try to keep up answering questions.  I encourage you to take a look at the website:  www.charliebrownforcongress.org for my positions on many issues.

Thank you for being here Charlie Brown ;-) (3.00 / 20)
As a Californian (non-native) and close to being a neighbor (I'm in CA-08), I supported your run in 2006 and wish you the best this time around.

One concern I have is a Proposition (#98) that will be appearing on the Ballot in June. This proposition has been put forward by the "Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association"

http://www.sos.ca.gov/election...

My concern, as I am a Renter and unable to afford a Home in San Francisco, is this:

Did you know that Proposition 98, on the June 2008 ballot, would end
rent control in California under the guise of "eminent domain reform"?
Prop 98 also has the potential to end infrastructure projects and
curtail environmental protections; in fact, it could even effectively
destroy all local planning of land use! Tim Hsu-DFA

Can I assume that you would be against this Republican endorsed initiative?

Thank you,Ed

And congratulations on winning the VoteVets grant!

I think I saw something on your web site about being in favor of the concept of universal health care. How do you envision implementing it?

Universal health care (3.00 / 21)
I support health care that covers everyone, has quality, is transferable, affordable and offers consumer choice.  Getting there is going to take a few more years.
Right now we can push for passage of children's health care, SCHIP to cover children.  We can push to allow people to buy into Medicare early to provide health care for those unable to obtain affordable coverage.  Let Mecicare act as an HMO for those who can't get coverage.  Then we can begin a serious discussion of what form universal coverage will be.  Lots of different plans.  We do not want to rush into a universal plan that will just create confusion like Medicare Part D.
charlie

[ Parent ]
Thanks. (3.00 / 13)
Health care is a real concern of mine. It just keeps getting more and more expensive for less coverage, and we pay more per capita than other countries that have full universal coverage.

[ Parent ]
Unfortunately... (3.00 / 16)
I fear that you're right. It will take a lot of wrangling to get UHC passed through Congress. I do hope that you'll work hard at passing UHC for all once the issue gets addressed in Congress.

We can't let our fellow citizens die because they don't have health care coverage. It's just plain wrong and unAmerican IMO.

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

[ Parent ]
I agree Charlie. One question I do have though is... (3.00 / 16)
the term "affordable coverage" is bandied about a lot. I know it's a hard thing to put some kind of number on and that "affordable" is really in the eye of the beholder, but do have any income percentage thoughts as to what "affordable" actually would mean?

[ Parent ]
Excellent point, poligirl. (3.00 / 7)
Affordable, available, and a no denial clause. No ins. is better than the snipe hunt that is trying to find coverage under the current system.

BTW, thank you for your participation Mr. Brown. I used to live in Paradise CA, close to Oroville. That was forever ago, but I remember it as beautiful.

Hi Charlie (3.00 / 14)
I'm just joining but had a follow up question on health care.  In addition to making it affordable, what ideas do you have to provide more support to providers and individuals who work on preventive health care, not just at the emergency or disease end?  Thanks!

We cannot solve the problems of today using the same thinking that created them~Albert Einstein

[ Parent ]
Major health care question/concern... (3.00 / 13)
Between now and when an affordable health care program can be offered to all Americans, do you believe there should be an escalated and concerted effort to introduce legislation that stops insurance companies from denying and/or canceling coverage to their insureds?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Hi Charlie (3.00 / 17)
My official greeting from VA02...Welcome!

Welcome, Charlie, and thank you... (3.00 / 18)
...it's an honor to have you visit us here at eenrblog.

Our regular visitors know I've been posting a daily update on the situation in Tibet. My question to you is, first, what should be done to help bring resolution to this conflict?

And second, what can be done?

I appreciate your response.

Hi Charlie, (3.00 / 17)
First, I'd like to say thanks for being here.  I'd also like to add it's little wonder the campaign was so honored by VoteVets.org, with your service record and the Promises Kept Fund.

Can you tell us a little about the fund?

"The people who are for me, are fearless." -JRE

Promises kept (3.00 / 21)
I made a commitment to actually support troops and veterans.  Easy to use veterans and the flag for photo ops, but I actually wanted to do something for them.  I'm giving 5% of campaign money raised to local veterans providers.  We asked for local groups to apply, then did an online vote to determine the winners.  Details are on the website:  http://www.charliebrownforcong...

VoteVets.org is a great organization of Irag and Afghanistan veterans working to raise awareness of how to defend our country smartly.  Getting all voters, veterans and others to be informed about issues is a key issue.

[ Parent ]
Thanks Charlie (3.00 / 15)
Too bad we couldn't get more candidates to do this.

"The people who are for me, are fearless." -JRE

[ Parent ]
Thanks for leading by example... (3.00 / 16)
Imagine what other candidates could do for vets and others struggling in America if they followed your lead? Every little bit helps and I hope more candidates consider giving back to those in need.

Yesterday, as you probably know, we reached 4,000 American casualties in Iraq. Will you work to end the war if elected to Congress? If so, how do you plan to help bring Republicans across the aisle to end the war?

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

Along this line (3.00 / 18)
At what point would you support defunding if it became clear that stonewalling was occuring to keep us there?

[ Parent ]
Iraq (3.00 / 18)
Yes I would work to end the war in Iraq.
I posted a comprehensive national security plan, which includes Ira, on my web site over year ago.
My wife was an AF Nurse, I served in the AF for 26 years, and my son has served  4 rotations in Iraq - goes back for the 5th time in May.
I am very concerned about the war and it's effect on our military, our country and the world.  I was speaking out about the danger of a war with Iraq, the need to fight effectively in Afghanistan, before the invasion.
The world is a dangerous place, we need a strong, capbable military.  But a strong military is only effective when used smartly, against our enemies.  Politics has interfered in gathering the intelligence we need to keep our country safe.  Intelligence gathering was what I was involved in the last 20 years of my AF career.
I will work with military leaders, like General Patreaus, who recognize that the military can only provide the windows of opportunity for the political and economic solutions that will bring stability to Iraq and the region.

We need more people with military background in Congress that speak with first hand authority on defending the country.  We must all, Republicans and Democrats, work together to solve problems.  The last few years have proven that partisanship doesn't work.

[ Parent ]
My best to Jeff, Charlie. (3.00 / 12)
A related question, given your history of miltary service, can you think of a time when we have asked so much from out men and women who serve?  Has there been a time when they would be expected to do 5 tours?

Prop 98 (3.00 / 22)
yes, this is a typical initiative that starts off limiting the use of eminent domain for economic gain and then sneaks in eliminating rent control.
There's is a competing intitiative that stops at just limiting eminent domain for economic reasons, that is the one I support.
Eminent domain should only be used for needed public works, and then very sparingly.
Affordable housing is a critical issue, rent control is one tool to keep people from being homeless.
Charlie

Thanks Charlie (3.00 / 15)
I see that would be Prop 99.

Hey Charlie! Welcome to the EENR! my question is... (3.00 / 18)
not necessarily a federal one, so I understand if you don't have an answer to it.

I believe you have a California teaching credential so I was just wondering what you thought about home-schooling and requirements for home-schoolers as well as home-schooled students?

The topic is now becoming an issue in California, the fallout of which could affect people in other states such as my sister.

Global warming/energy question (3.00 / 16)
What role do you see California playing in helping to get the U.S. off our addiction to oil? And what kind of initiatives would you support in the U.S. Congress to help us make the transition to alternative energy?

Addiction to oil (3.00 / 17)
California has long been in the lead to clean up the country's air and water.  With our high tech base, California can continue to push for alternative sources of energy, wind, solar, tide, fuel cells, alternative fuels.  Congress can push for tax credits to povide the incentives for research and test projects.
With our large dependence on automobiles, California can continue to be in the lead to push manufacturers to meet state standards for a higher quality vehicle than federal standards require.

[ Parent ]
I think California is really leading the way on this. (3.00 / 13)
...and I look forward to seeing that continue.

[ Parent ]
More reps like Charlie... (3.00 / 11)
And maybe some more good progressives in the State Assembly.

"The people who are for me, are fearless." -JRE

[ Parent ]
Sure seems like it (3.00 / 13)
California is willing to go where the federal government won't yet. I hope other states especially those surrounding CA will follow its lead.

[ Parent ]
I think that that is going (3.00 / 13)
to be a patently evident need, if not already, as we just got Premium Gas in Palo Alto for $4.33. Regular Gas was $3.79

I know this was Cong (CA-11) Jerry McNerney's line of work before he was elected to Congress.

Do you envision working with him on these alternative sources of energy to end our dependence?

Hello Charlie from LA-04 (3.00 / 16)
Sorry I'm late, wanted to wish you luck and congratulations on the votevets endorsment.

Compromise sounds a lot like capitulation, doesn't it? ~Elizabeth Edwards

HI Charlie, thanks for being here (3.00 / 16)
My question is on the environment.  In particular I am becoming concerned about fresh water becoming a new commodity to be controlled by private interests.  Have you given any thought as to how we should manage the flow of water to cities and across the country particularly in drought areas such as Atlanta.  I think this is very important in California as well.

Fresh water (3.00 / 20)
I have given this a lot of thought.  Would like to be on the Congressional Committee on Natural Resources, sub committee on Water.
We must all be aware that water is becoming scarce. Whether you believe in global warming (as I do) or natural climate swings as others do, the temperature is going up and safe clean water is a problem.  It will take federal action since rivers flow across state boundaries and can be considered a part of interstate commerece.
Farmers are learning to grow crops with less water, and we want to continue to be able to grow food in this country.  Home owners are learning to plant yards that are appropriate for the climate.  Appliances are becoming more water efficient.
This is a problem that will affect us all in the coming years.  Now is the time to make the small changes that will make a big difference in the years to come.

[ Parent ]
Thanks for that answer (3.00 / 11)
and it is so good to see a candidate this well informed on the subject.  I do hope to see you on the "Congressional Committee on Natural Resources, sub committee on Water".

[ Parent ]
One more question on human rights/environment (3.00 / 17)
I was discussing the issue of safe drinking water earlier today with another blogger here who is also running for congress, in the state of Delaware.

Would you be willing to introduce or help sign into law legislation that would state that access to safe drinking water is a human right?

I think such legislation would go a long way toward helping us address the problem of global poverty.

Thanks, again, for your response.

glad you got to hear the interview.  If you go to our main BlogTalkRadio page there are the other interviews we have done.

And we have a few more over the next week that we need to nail down a time on (both are on the "Red To Blue" list).  We hope to get around 30 by Netroots Nation time.

[ Parent ]
Are you going to host a panel at Netroots Nation? (3.00 / 7)
It would be cool if you could host a live radio show at Netroots Nation with some of the candidates in attendance. Is that even possible? I haven't had the chance to go to Ykos the past couple years but I am definitely attending Netroots Nations this year.

Well Doolittle was bad, but so is McClintock and Ose. Neither will even address Iraq.

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

[ Parent ]
Hi Charlie, (3.00 / 14)
... (   Could you imagine one of the potential candidates from the other party doing this, everyone? )

where to start...

I have read that the Bush/Cheney Administration plans to go to the United Nations soon and try to get other nations to commit more of their forces to Afghanistan.

Do you think this attempt to get other countries involved will help stabelize that country, which seems to be partially under Taliban/insurgent control again ?  And do you think they will succeed in getting this to happen, and if so, what sort of favorable political climate would have to occur here

the reason I was asking was that when I was running errands today I watched a CNN ticker screen and they were saying Cheney was in Turkey and I know there 's been a lot of Republicans running around the Mideast this past week and meanwhile we have some of the other ones seemingly trying to start up the "we need to start war on Iran" routine.

In other words, do you think anyone is running our foreign policy now to try to get some sort of result or is this all looking like grandstanding?

ps not spellchecked sorry

Afghanistan (3.00 / 16)
We need a foreign policy that involves other countries.  The push in Afghanistan is to get more NATO troops invovled.  What we need is not just troops, we need the invovlement of NATO and other countries in the economic rebuilding of Afghanistan, Iraq and so many countries in Africa.
Notice the change from the 'go it alone' policy to the recognition that we do need the help of other nations to have a real foreign policy.

Thanks for your post this morning on DailyKos.
charlie

[ Parent ]
Thank you for that. (3.00 / 7)
I completely agree that we cannot go it alone, and the only way we will get other nations involved is to elect a Democratic President of the US and a Democratic Congress. Best of luck to you.

[ Parent ]
Hey Charlie (3.00 / 17)
Congrats on getting the VoteVets endorsement. It was well-deserved and I voted for you!

John Doolittle was one of the most corrupt members of congress. I believe the people of the forth district deserve better. Recently Larry Lessig who considered running in California's 12th district decided instead to launch a Change Congress movement. I am wondering were you stand on the four core issues of this movement. They are

-not accept contributions from registered lobbyists or PACs.
-support the abolition of "earmarks."
-support reform to increase transparency in Congress
-support public financing of public elections.

Or you could pick one. Whatever you have time for! If you do support any of those issues I would urge you or your campaign staff to sign up here:
http://change-congress.org/ple...

Grassroots donors who want to Change Congress are pledging to donate to canidates to sign on to the pledge and you seem like just the kind of guy to clean up congress!

Thanks so much for coming by.

As you probably know many young men and women join the service as a result of the "economic draft", many joining the Guard as a means of having access to education as well as skills training. Two part question:

1) Could you explain your stance on Guardsman serving overseas when they are needed in their own state, also the states having to provide equipment that could possibly needed at home when there are disasters.

Another alternative energy question (3.00 / 18)
Hi, Charlie,
Thanks for being here today. My question goes along with Be Inspired's question about global warming and alternative energy initiatives. I live in a perfect area for solar panels, yet they are so expensive I can't afford them. How can government support this industry to get the prices down? Or perhaps offer low interest loans so that folks like me who want to install them can?

I like that question. (3.00 / 12)
I used to live in Santa Cruz, CA and always wanted to put solar panels on my house there, which would have been perfect for it, but it just wasn't economically feasible.

[ Parent ]
Solar Panels (3.00 / 12)
Other nations are helping citizens finance solar panels.  My son was amazed at the number of roofs in Germany that had solar panels installed while he was stationed there.   The current congressional plan to let the tax breaks for large oil companies expire and use the money to subsidize alternative energy, like solar, is the right priority.

Hey, Charlie (3.00 / 18)
It's Brian Keeler from NY saying hey.

Been following the campaign and I'm real pleased that soon I'll be addressing you as Congressman Brown.

When are you coming east again?

And Welcome to you too Brian (3.00 / 13)
Glad we got to meet at that SF Kossack Fundraiser last year.
You sure you don't want to move to NY-21 and pick up a Democratic Open Seat?
If not I hope you will be running for something in the near future.
Cheers,Ed (Your Fishkill,NY connection)

Hi Charley! (3.00 / 12)
Welcome! Thank you for being here and for running!

Hiya Charlie! (3.00 / 14)
Thanks for blogging here! I have one question, if you're still around to answer it: Obviously being a veteran has informed your views on foreign policy and the use of our military. But how has your service informed how you view other issues, like say, education or the environment?

On being a Veteran (3.00 / 19)
Being a veteran taught me that it's all about taking care of your men and women and getting results.
Talk is cheap, take action, get results.

Military is big on education. I took advantage of every course I could take to learn more.  GI bill is an example of the mililtary's commitment to education - but the GI Bill needs to be expanded.

Military in in the lead on alternative energy.  Largest solar power array in the United States is online at a military base. Air Force says it will have all of its airplanes certified to fly on alternative fuels by 2013.

Naval War College says global warming is real and will be the number one strategic issue in the coming years.

The list goes on, but being a veteran has kept me informed about the world.

Peace.

Great to have you here tonight! (3.00 / 16)
Met you in Washington back in 06 when you were here for a Band of Brothers gathering, and have been a supporter as best I can since.  Congrats on the VoteVets grant today as well; you definitely deserve it!

My question for tonight is on the Iraq misadventure: some in Congress say they want to bring the troops home but keep voting to approve the Bush funding requests.  What will you do?

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. MLK Jr

Accountabilty for funding (3.00 / 12)
Good question that gets to the point.
No war funding without enforceable benchmarks.
Everytime a politician says we will stay in Iraq for 100 years, it sends the message that the Iraqi politicians don't have to take action to achieve the 'political reconciliation' that General Patreaus says is necessary.
Do nothing, we'll keep sending our troops and money.   The Iraqi's in power stay safe behind our troops and rake off all their oil money, plus a third of our aid money, your tax dollars, in corruption.
Accountability for the money, whether it is to U.S. contractors or to the Iraqi's.

Hi Charlie! (3.00 / 15)
I am honored to see you posting live here, and I'm late, but I wish you the best of luck from Texas, where I reside. My focus is beating John Cornyn and electing Rick Noriega to the senate, but I pay attention, with the help of this excellent group here, to all senate races around the country. Though my questions will be pretty general, i do have one.

Are you familiar with the Courage campaign? I'm sure you are, but I really appreciate their work on defeating the ballot that would have handed the Republicans in that state a number of electoral votes by changing the system. Luckily that was defeated, but there was also a controversy with the California primary. I'm not saying that HRC didn't win, but the fact that there were problems, which led to some supporters' conspiracy theories, shows that the process of voting and votes being counted is still an important issue.

Not just for California, bit for everywhere and I'm still one who simply does not trust electronic voting. with good reason, for there was a study on electronic voting on HBO called "Hacked" exposing how this Presidential election or any Congressional election.

I would like to know what measure, if any, is being taken to assure that companies like Diebold, do not have a stake and are not in business in providing the machines or the source code in which the votes are actually counted with on the memory cards to these machines? I know some measures in some states have been taken to get rid of touch screens, which is good, but what would you do to try to pursue this issue, if anything, because I have a feeling there are going to be shenanigans in California, because we have already seen them happen.

I guess it just comes down to what would you do to ensure that all of your constituents' votes are protected and counted?

Sorry for all the blabber, but I think this is still an important issue, for this issue affects every voter in the entire country in it's relevance.

Welcome and glad to have you (3.00 / 14)
and congrats on the vote of support from VoteVets.

Question regarding your district and outreach. How has the reaction been from voters to your candidacy so far? I just read on your site that you came very close to winning last time. Do you get the sense that more people know you and are ready for change? I would think people would be even more fed up with the Republicans now than before.

Thanks again for stopping by and good luck on your race - we really need strong democrats in Congress to take back America and reverse course.

4th CD (3.00 / 14)
Reaction from the district has been fantastic.
Starting with the election night party, which was a real party, I have been encouraged to keep running.
Incumbent, John Doolittle, has announced he's not running for re-election.  After a state wide talent search and a lot of different names popping up, there are two out of district Republicans who appear to be the main contenders to run against me. The most common word being used in the district is 'carpetbaggers'.
I've lived in the district since 1991.  My two children went to Roseville public schools and then to the University of Irvine and Sacramento State College.  My wife has worked in the district, I have worked in the district.  My family has enjoyed hiking, skiing, all the wonderful recreational oppportunities of the district.

Yes, I think more people are looking for an alternative to what the Republican party has become.  I was a registered Republican for many years, the party left me.   I became a Democrat because this is the party that is offering solutions and letting me be myself.  I took an oath to defend this country.  I will defend it. Patriotism is more than a word to me.

[ Parent ]
Thank you for the response (3.00 / 10)
and very encouraging - seems like a great opportunity and you seem like a great candidate for the district. I imagine a lot of Republicans are feeling the way you did right now with the current administration sending our troops out with out a plan to win and without taking adequate care of them in the field and when they come home.

Good luck on the race! I was Berkeley and lived in nearby for a while, but living in VA now. Still have some friends in your district and will make sure and spread the word.

And again thanks so much for taking the time to respond to so many questions.

He did respond to the first question... (3.00 / 9)
He didn't directly reply to the commenter so it got lost a little on the thread. Here is his answer:

yes, this is a typical initiative that starts off limiting the use of eminent domain for economic gain and then sneaks in eliminating rent control.
There's is a competing intitiative that stops at just limiting eminent domain for economic reasons, that is the one I support.
Eminent domain should only be used for needed public works, and then very sparingly.
Affordable housing is a critical issue, rent control is one tool to keep people from being homeless.

Hi, Charlie, thanks for being here and I hope I'm not too late! (3.00 / 14)
It's taken me 20 minutes to read all the comments.  Very good questions here, and I appreciate your answers.

I'm in Florida District 13 - Christine Jennings (D) is running against Vern Buchanan this year.

Besides the climate crisis (#1 on my list),UHC (#2), and energy strategies that move away from our need for ME oil, I am most interested in campaign finance reform so that we don't have to have these beauty contests that cost so much money to get messages to the people.  In conjunction with this, what do you think about the media consolidation situation and that so much campaign money is spent on ads?

Best of luck, and I'll support you financially too.

And a small diary here also.

I am sure he would enjoy cards and letters also.

Support the troops (3.00 / 14)
I encourage everyone to support the troops with actual actions.  That is why we have the Promises Kept challenge mentioned earlier.
I have been contacted by so many veterans looking for help they are not getting from the government.  We must all get invovled with local providers to help them.
These are our neighbors, brothers and sisters, classmates.
I receive almost daily emails or phone calls from veterans looking for help.  Imagine opening up your email and finding a message from a veteran who has attempted suicide and is contacting you for help.  It has happened more than once in my campaign.
So far we have helped a lot of veterans. It strengthens my resolve to keep fighting.

[ Parent ]
Thanks for your reply Charlie. (3.00 / 7)
Out soldiers are the best, they deserve as much as we can give them, even if we just send notes and cards it is great for them.

Thanks again, and best with your campaign.

Wow, as we approach the last half- (3.00 / 15)
I want to make sure I thank Charlie, and comment on how amazing it's been that he and Todd have kept up with all the questions.

Can you think of another candidate willing to take the time to have this kind of an honest and informative dialog with us?

Please take the time to vist his site, and make sure you set aside a few bucks in these hard times to support a candidate that will go to Washington for all of us.

I know Charlie won't ask, but I will.  Do what you can to fight for Charlie.  Be a part of the good fight, and do what you can to stop the repuglikin money machine all ready licking their chops of Ca-04.

We're all in this together, and I can not think of a better Rep to send to Congress for all of us.

Thank you Charlie Brown, Todd, Jan, and the whole staff.

Brown for stopping by and EENR for making it happen. This my first comment here at EENR--there will be many more.

My question (s)

I checked out your health care section on your issue page and although I was glad you're committed to universal health care, your position was left vague.

Would you ever support a single-payer, Medicare for all type solution?

What's your opinion on the mandate (Clinton) v. non-mandate (Obama) debate?

Welcome David (3.00 / 11)

Higher Education (3.00 / 12)
Thank you, Charlie, for blogging here with us.

Many of the issues that worry me (water, health care, Iraq) have already been addressed.  Higher education is another one of my big issues.

It is nearly impossible for anyone not wealthy to save to put their children through college (this includes even upper middle income families).  After meeting day-to-day necessities, you can choose between saving for retirement or saving for college (if you are lucky).

My father managed to get a doctorate while raising three children and yet have zero debt.  No credit card debt.  No student loans.  He did this working part-time, my mother working part-time and babysitting and some GI Bill help.

Our children cannot do that.  To have security, they need more than a bachelor's degree, but even a bachelor's degree is going to land them with huge debt.

I have a friend who is sure the government likes it this way.  It makes it easier to recruit for the military.

This is short-sighted.  We need to have the best educated generation ever if we are to compete on this "flat Earth".  Making higher education so difficult to attain is handicapping a bright generation.

What are your plans for making higher education attainable for any qualified student?

Hi Charlie (3.00 / 8)
I sent two questions ahead of time and I don't see them here.

They are in the realm of civil rights.

What are your thoughts about DATD for the military

and for the national level,

What are your thoughts for civil unions for same sex couples on the federal level?
