Regina Thomas, LIVE-BLOGGING HERE! NOW!

by: edgery

Tue Jun 24, 2008 at 17:09:40 PM EDT

In just an hour (6 pm edt), State Senator Regina Thomas will be here to answer questions and talk to us about why she's running for Congress.

Before that, I want to introduce her to the EENRblog community and let you know why I personally support her candidacy. [note: this is a personal endorsement rather than an announcement by EENRblog at this time.]

Here's a quote from Senator Thomas -- it explains exactly why I support this amazing woman from my home town:

"This country was built on the backs and at the hands and sacrifices of working-class people. My voting record is 100% for working families. To see what this country is doing to families and the working-class is an abomination. Outsourcing our jobs to foreign nations-- taking food out of the mouths of our children can not and should not be tolerated.  This is the very fact that nothing will be done to bring the jobs back to America. With the national deficit being so high we do not even own America. IT IS TIME TO TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK!"
edgery :: Regina Thomas, LIVE-BLOGGING HERE! NOW!
Brief Bio:
Senator Regina Thomas of Savannah was elected to the Georgia State Senate in a special election on January 11, 2000. She also served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1995 to 1998, where her efforts were focused on education, children's issues and welfare reform. She served as Assistant Majority Whip in the House from 1997 through 1998.

The Senate Committee on Assignments appointed Senator Thomas to serve as a member of the Education, Appropriations, Reapportionment & Redistricting, and Regulated Industries & Utilities Committees. She is a member of the Appropriations Sub-Committees for Economic Development, Health Care, and Public Safety. She also serves on the Judiciary Sub-committee, the Diabetes Advisory Council and the Georgia World Congress Center Overview committee. Senator Thomas chaired the Senate State Institutions and Property Committee during 2002-2004.

Senator Thomas is the recipient of many awards including "Legislator of the Year 2005 - Georgia Environmental Council", "One of the Most Influential Women, 2006", "The Rev. James Sims Public Service Award, 2003-King Tisdal Institute", Georgia Outstanding Woman of the Year 2007-The Georgia Deaf Association", "Voted 2006 and 2007 Platinum Awards as the Best Community Leader", "Elected Official of the Month May 2005 - Georgia Equality", "Distinguished Service Award - Helen Keller Foundation", etc.

Senator Thomas was nominated by the Savannah Morning News as a Person of Impact "for being a voice in the legslature for those without a voice", "for fighting, with some success, to keep children from being locked out of the State's PeachCare Program for poor families", "for tireless efforts to get state help for the neediest people in her District", "for understanding that success at doing so requires working cooperatively with lawmakers of the opposite party", "for refusing to be silenced even though it cost her a Committee Chairmanship".

A native of Savannah, Senator Thomas is a 1970 graduate of A.E. Beach High School. She is married to Ervin J. Thomas, Sr., a retired policeman. They have three sons, a daughter and nine grandchildren. Senator Thomas also attended Savannah Tech, and the Community College of Baltimore (MD).

She is a member of the Liberty City Church of Christ in Savannah, and she attends area churches regularly.

Active in community affairs, Senator Thomas is a member of Pathways Teaching at Savannah State University. She volunteers with the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum and the Chatham-Savannah Citizen Advocacy Office.

Senator Thomas proudly represents the 2nd Senate District, which includes portions of Chatham County and the City of Savannah. Her favorite scripture is Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" - KJV. Her philosophy is "To thine own self be true"-Shakespeare.

What any such bio doesn't tell you about is the passion and commitment of Senator Regina Thomas to her community and to her country.  In his introduction to her live-blogging session at FireDogLake, Howie Klein writes:

In the last few weeks that I've gotten to know Regina Thomas, I've gotten to know a woman, a grandmother and a deeply caring fighter who will always stand up... regardless of what anybody says. Once the Deputy Majority Whip of the Georgia House, since 2000 she has been a senator representing the 2nd district, which includes part of her native Savannah and portions of Chathan County.

Senator Thomas is already seasoned in the ways of legislatures, and she already knows about "compromises" that undercut the children in her district.  She already

At DownWithTyranny, they cheered on her entry into the race against Bush Dog Barrow with this introduction:

An impressive Democratic state Senator from Savannah, Regina Thomas, tossed her hat into the ring against Barrow. Yesterday Senator Thomas told me she considers herself a fiscal conservative but when I started asking her the Blue America questions, she had all the right answers. She's adamantly opposed to the occupation of Iraq. When she talks about being pro-choice she makes complete sense on the non-ideological human level and she already voted against an attempt by the far right to pass an anti-gay constitutional amendment in Georgia. ... Her legislative passions have involved education, children's issues,  welfare reform, veterans and defense issues, technology and consumer affairs.

And speaking of her opponent, the incumbent John Barrow -- well, let's just say that he's rarely met a Bush legislative proposal he didn't embrace.  Oh, he's pleading with everyone he can find to talk Senator Thomas from running against him, and he's having one of those great election-year conversion on a number of issues when he's visiting at home in Savannah. But when the Chips Are Down, he ranks at the very bottom of the pile of Democrats in the House in terms of progressive voting record.  To date, in the current Congress, there are only 3 Congresscritters below him (Nick Lampson-TX, Jim Marshall-GA, and Don Cazayoux-LA); Barrow comes in at a scraping-the-bottom-of-the-barrel 31.34%.

But rather than rail against Barrow (too easy), I'm asking you to join us for our live-blogging session with Georgia State Senator Regina Thomas, candidate to represent my home town of Savannah and (parts of) Chatham County, Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives.  Once you get to know this proud, strong and wonderful woman, I think you'll agree.  She deserves all the support we can give!

Hello, thanks for this live blog - I am fighting hard to make sure that the 12th district will be represented by a true democrat.  There are so many areas of the district that has been untouched by the incumbent.

Hang in there!  Last shall be first and first shall be last.  I will scrap NCLB altogether.  It has been a miserable failure.  To exempt 10 States from the unfunded mandates of NCLB is wrong.  Bush created another level of Government red-tape at the expense of our children.  We need to stop dumbing down America.  The $$$being paid in slaaries to those in the NCLB chain could very well go to help our college students with tutition/books. Did you know that the congressman from the 12th was conveniently absent the day when the vote was taken to help with this?  HR7669 - The Cololege Reduction Act.

Thank you Sen. Thomas (3.00 / 6)
We are here from the The Progressive Electorate a new progressive blog. We posted our first diary about this race.

John Barrow is a complete embarrassment for a Congressman.

But on the flip side, I am really enthusiastic from what I hear from you.

Thanks Regina! While college has been worth it, it's been... (3.00 / 3)
maddening to attempt to make ends meet...

Since I have class in a half hour, I will post my question for Regina here... (3.00 / 6)
I am a college student who is completely dependent on financial aid. I was wondering what, in your opinion, should/could be done to promote and help facilitate higher education in the country?

In addition, do you have any thoughts on way to fix the No Child Left Behind program for those in K-12?

Thanks!

Thank You Regina for joining us (3.00 / 7)
I've only been to Georgia once, a flight that stopped in Atlanta, but I hear Savannah is wonderful.

I have Three questions for you:

1. What is your stance on Universal Healthcare for all Americans?

2. What is your opinion on Equal Civil Rights for the GLBT Community?

3. Do you believe that Cong. John Barrow represents the best interests of your district?

Thank you, Ed (EENR Editorial Team)

I hope to visit your area someday. In the meantime I reside in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's Congressional District.

3 questions from a first time GA visitor (3.00 / 8)
I believe that everyone should have access to affordable healthcare.  If we were not so busy in Bush's war and taking care of everybody else - we could afford to provide universal Healthcare for all.  Eliminating some of the big tax cuts for corporations would be a step in finding the $$$.  Our Congressman voted no to repeal the tax cuts for the big oil companies.  Imagine that - while the democrats voted yes to repeal, Barrow voted with the Republicans HR6.

I believe that since we are all human beings created by one GOd that we should be treated as such.  Barrow even voted against the hate crimes bill.  Imagine that and he is in the A/A community talking about his life membership in the NAACP.  In the Senate I co-sponsored a bill to include all groups in the hate crimes bill.  Unfortunately the Republicans voted it down.

"NO"

Whe you visit GA again, do give me a call - or visit me in Washingtom in January 09.

imagine the party we'll have! (3.00 / 6)
Have you had the opportunity to meet or talk to Donna Edwards, the new Representative from Maryland's 4th CD?  Your challenge to Barrow is being favorably compared to her successful challenge to former Rep. Al Wynn.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. MLK Jr

Barrow also voted Yes on DOMA (3.00 / 5)
(Defense of Marriage Act) and voted Yes on FISA.

His record speaks for itself it is very Conservative. Unfortunetly to him, being Conservative evidently means that Gay Taxpayers & Citizens like me and my Partner are second class citizens. This is something the AA Community has had to endure for over a Century:

Choice for the July 15th Primary (3.00 / 7)
Once the difference is made between Barrow and myself - to let the voters in the 12th district to see and to know that he has not been there for us - that he is there for Bush, the Republicans and himself.  I am encouraging those who live in the 12th district to go to washingtonpost.com to see for themselves how he has voted - 2006/2007.  All of a sudden he is now trying to be a democrat since this is an election year.

Is Barrow's excuse for pandering to the Gop/Right (3.00 / 5)
Due to the Politics of your District? Or, is it just who he really is?
He had the 5th closest House race in 2006, winning by less than a thousand votes.

I love your 42 reasons video - one question (3.00 / 6)
1)I think it's #19 where Barrow says "I've supported the President's war on terror at every turn." Show that everywhere you go.

2) I was a bit surprised by Barack Obama's endorsement. Most people believe that he shold have stayed out of this race. I thought that it might help you get some attention and be a boost more than hurt you. The fact that a Sitting Congressman had to get the Presidential nominee to help him in the first place is rather silly. Do you in fact believe this in fact helping you?

[ Parent ]
42 reasons/Obama's endorsement (3.00 / 7)
42 Reasons is hot.  I have told everybody that I come in contact with to watch it.  Just the facts!

Barrow's polls evidently is not showing him what he wants to see.  So..he had to pull out the top dog - the big gun.  With all of his $$$ you would think that he could stand on his own - Oh! I forgot - his voting record stinks.  My bad!

I do believe that the endorsement did help me.  Most people in the other counties did not know that I was running for Congress - Obama actually put me on the map - the contributions quadtrupled when that ad came out.  Normally, we stay out of contested primaries and wait on the general when there is Republican opposition.  It tells a story about favors - Barrow and his "super Delegate vote" that Obama needed and now Obama paid back the favor.  Risky!  I certainly hope that it does not hurt Obama in November.  I am going to vote for him anyway.  The only thing about the endorsement is that Obama does not know Barrow's voting record and Obama lied about Barrow fighting against Bush and the Republican agenda.

[ Parent ]
Regina, who did you initially Endorse/Vote for in the Presidential (3.00 / 5)
Primaries?

Another good place to check his voting record (3.00 / 7)
is Progressive Punch where you can compare his votes to other members of Congress on a wide range of issues such as Justice for All (60.87%) or Human Rights & Civil Liberties (69.44%).  He has some decent scores as well but his overall score of 68.85% puts him at #226 out of 435 House Critters, not so great.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. MLK Jr

[ Parent ]
Progressive Punch (3.00 / 7)
Speaking of Civil Justice - he voted against placing a moratorium on the Death Penalty.

[ Parent ]
Barrow pandering (3.00 / 7)
I think this is who he is.  I feel that he only comes around to get the votes then it's off to the races in Washington to help Bush and the big dogs.  The 12th district is not that conservative - with 60% dems and 44.5% A/A's.  He wanted those in Congress to believe that this district is that conservative to have an excuse to vote with the Republicans.  His claim to that is he only won in 06 by 864 votes.  The truth is many did not vote for him or Burns.  They felt that they did not have a choice.  As a matter of fact Sanford Bishop's district is more conservative than the 12th.  His record does not match Bishops.  So much for an excuse.

[ Parent ]
What part of the district is this race going to come down to? (3.00 / 6)
where are you fighting the hardest for the votes?

Fighting for votes (3.00 / 7)
The entire district.  I am going to every County.  Even the smaller counties are crucial.  Those votes add up.  I can not take anything for granted and I will leave no stone unturned.

[ Parent ]
A major issue facing the next Congress will (3.00 / 5)
be the economic mess the current Administration is leaving. What do you think Congress can or should do to help those displaced by the loss of jobs, homes, etc?

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. MLK Jr

The 111th Congress (3.00 / 5)
This is a mess to have to clean up.  However; the first thing that we can do to help with the economic diaster - NAFTA/CAFTA - we need reciprocity.  If we allow imports with no taxes - then we should be able to export with no taxes.  Dumbest thing I ever heard of.  Revisiting tax cuts, eliminating the waste and making everybody that works in America pay taxes - legal or illegal.  There's more - but since anybody can visit these sites - I do not want to give Barrow any ideas.

[ Parent ]
FISA (3.00 / 5)
I am not surprised.  This is just an excuse to spy on Americans.  This bill is 'smokin mirrors' and the American people will have to pay/suffer because of it.  I will revisit this when I get there.  Now what happens to the 4th constitutional amendment?  Barrow is actually proud of this vote.

Well, I am not for sale, my people are not for sale and America is not for sale (even if we don't own it)  Shame on them all!

[ Parent ]
sorry to be hoggin the floor here but.... (3.00 / 5)
Politico is reporting on a MAPlight report that of the 94 Dems who voted to approve the latest FISA "compromise" protecting the telecoms, they receive significant contributions from the companies under suit for cooperating with the Administration in illegally spying on law-abiding Americans.  Guess who is listed?
Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint gave PAC contributions averaging:

$8,359 to each Democrat who changed their position to support immunity for Telcos (94 Dems)
$4,987 to each Democrat who remained opposed to immunity for Telcos (116 Dems)

88 percent of the Dems who changed to supporting immunity (83 Dems of the 94) received PAC contributions from Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint during the last three years (Jan. 2005-Mar. 2008). See below for list of these 94 Dems.

on that note look at what the netroots have done (3.00 / 6)
in the last what five days since this race heated up with the Obama announcement. I think you have raised almost $30,000 on Act Blue since that time.

Hopefully it will go up since then. People are just tired of politics as usual in this country.

Here are the links to (3.00 / 6)
Regina Thomas on Act Blue as well as Blue America PAC which will undertake some independent support for candidates such as Senator Thomas.

Senator Thomas is currently rated #2 in activity on Act Blue.  We need her at #1 for a good while to overcome Barrow's warchest built on corporate funding with a few nice hand-outs from our good buddies Rahm and Steny.

Handguns (3.00 / 5)
You had to go there!  The right to bear arms is still intact.  My husband is a retired police sgt so we do own guns.  Guns do not kill - people do.  Guns in the wrong hands as with all of the school shootings/post office shooting, etc.  Too many innocent people have died.  I believe that people who want to carry and own guns should have training in how to use the guns, safety measures and storage of guns.

It is true that the criminals have better and larger guns than law enforcement.  Hope this helps, if not could you be more specific?

[ Parent ]

thanks a lot (3.00 / 6)
i'm just so excited about this race for several reasons

1. I love candidates like Regina Thomas that are in politics to truly help people.

2. There is just so much excitment and momentum right now.

3. I went to school in Athens and saw how John Barrow changed when he got to Washington.

[ Parent ]
Excitement (3.00 / 7)
This is exciting - I am meeting so many people and for the most part they do not like Barrow.  How many of you will come to DC to watch me take the oath?  This is a faith campaign and my steps are truly being ordered.  To think I had nothing ($$$) when I got into this race - to me - it's not about the $$$ (though it takes $$$ to get the message out) - it's about giving people a choice and giving them renewed hope - But now... the $$$ is coming in and the message will be told and it will be heard.  We will have 2 debates. - one live in ATL on 7/1 with GPB (Press) at 7 pm and the other in Statesboro on 7/3 - any takers?

[ Parent ]
we will continue to fight for you (3.00 / 6)
if at all possible we will try and come down before the election so we can give some people coverage from the district.

Continuing the Fight (3.00 / 7)

I'm in the DC area, and I plan on having a great time (3.00 / 3)
watching the BETTER Democrats getting sworn in.  I'll be delighted to join you that day!

I believe, in Regina Thomas, we would lose a Bush Dog and gain a true fighter for the progressive agenda.  She has already proven her mettle in the state legislature; now it's time for southeastern Georgia to send a real Representative of its citizens to Washington.

This is one lady that reminds me why I am still proud, after all these years, to say, "This is my hometown, this is Savannah, Georgia's first and still BEST city!"
