Live Blog w/ IA-3 Democratic Candidate Ed Fallon right here!!!

by: sarahlane

Thu May 22, 2008 at 11:25:07 AM EDT

At 1pm et or 10 am pt, Iowa state legislator and candidate for Congress Ed Fallon will be joining us for a live blog. Get your questions ready and let's get the conversation going! First, I'd like to tell you a little about who Ed Fallon is and why myself and my fellow EENR bloggers support him for Congress.

One of the first candidates the bloggers of EENR decided to endorse was state legislator Ed Fallon running for Congress in Iowa's 3rd c.d. It wasn't a difficult choice. Ed Fallon is a progressive's progressive. In his 14 years as a legislator in Iowa's House, he never accepted PAC/lobbyist money. Fallon had his values in place long before it was the progressive thing to do to refuse lobbyist/PAC money. Here's a statement from Fallon about why he's running for Congress:

Our country needs and wants change.  I'm ready to take on the corporate interests who have corrupted our federal government.  I'm ready to give working families and the poor a voice in national politics.  I'm ready to do what I can to see that environmental issues are taken seriously inside the beltway.  I'm ready to apply what I've learned during 23 years of public service in Iowa and be a part of the solution in Washington.

More below the fold....

sarahlane :: Live Blog w/ IA-3 Democratic Candidate Ed Fallon right here!!!
Ed Fallon v.s. Leonard Boswell

June 3rd is just around the corner and no one knows who is going to win the primary. There is a ton of daylight between Fallon and Boswell, and that's why we EENR bloggers are so adamant about ousting Boswell and replacing him with fightin' progressive Ed Fallon. Here's a little backround on what these two candidates have done in Government and what kind of Democrat they are.

I can't help but have personal benchmarks for what makes up a real progressive candidate. Fallon passes my test with flying colors. Fallon opposed the Iraq War from the start and supports passage of a timetable for withdrawal. Here's a snippet from Fallon about his opposition to the war:

It is now clear to nearly everyone that President Bush lied to Congress and to the American people when he spoke of weapons of mass destruction as the premise to go to war in Iraq.  I was among the tens of millions of Americans who opposed the war from the start, and who did not believe the President's justification for invasion.

Fallon is a huge advocate of UHC, which is incredibly important considering we may have a chance to vote on a UHC bill next year. Fallon supports publicly financed elections and has pledged to champion the issue in Congress. Here's a snippet from Fallon about his support for publicly financed elections:

The real solution is voluntary public financing of elections.  I support the Fair Elections Now Act (S.936) currently under consideration in the U.S. Senate. As a member of the U.S. House, I would introduce or cosponsor companion legislation. When we take the corrupting influence of money out of campaigns we will have a President and a Congress focused on the needs of people rather than demands of specials interests.

Ed Fallon has a long history of fighting on environmental and conservation issues. While Boswell cuts taxes for oil companies, Fallon will always put environmental interests above the CEO's of big oil. Another refreshing thing about Ed Fallon is that he's honest about our economic woes and the recent economic stimulus plan. Here's what he had to say about our tax rebates:

While I always support giving taxpayers some of their money back, let's be honest: this proposal will do nothing to fix our economy. At $600 a person, the package will be as effective as, say, giving a cup of coffee to someone who is seriously sleep-deprived.... To pay for the rebates, the federal government will borrow more money from China, give it to consumers, and recommend they go buy something - something probably made in China.

Fallon is right. We will achieve no long term stability by way of tax rebates. It's nice to see a politician be frank for a change. If you'd like to learn more about where Ed stands on the issues go here.

In the Iowa legislature, Ed Fallon has championed many issues we progressives care about. Fallon has fought against corporate farm takeovers and tried to protect the small family farms in Iowa. Fallon worked hard against HF 519 which led to the expansion of massive hog farms. Fallon introduced and passed legislation requiring voting machines to produce a paper trail. Fallon helped push through a 6% increase in public education funding and fought hard to increase teacher pay and reduce class sizes. Ed Fallon has always been a good friend to Iowa workers. He's pushed for minimum wage increases, stood in the picket lines with union brothers and sisters and introduced legislation to ban the hiring of replacement workers. If you'd like to take a closer look at Fallon's record in the legislature, go here

What about Fallon's Record v.s. Boswell's Record?

What about Leonard Boswell? Why have we chosen to support Fallon over Democratic incumbant Leonard Boswell? It's really no contest. Boswell lines his pockets with lobbyist/PAC money. In just one year's time, over 70% of Boswell's donations were from PACs. That's a lot!! Boswell voted to invade Iraq and continues to vote to fund the war. Boswell voted to allow electronic surveillance without warrants back in 2006 and voted to allow overseas wiretapping without a FISA warrant just last year. Boswell also voted to make the Patriot Act permanent back in 2005 and voted to ban flag desecration. Boswell voted for the Bankruptcy bill in 2005 and for the repeal of the estate tax. Boswell has continued to support the Bush/Cheney energy policies and even voted against raising CAFE standards back in 2001. Boswell also supports building a fence along the Mexico border. The truth is, Boswell is not the kind of Democrat I want representing the brand. Our party has been hurt over the years because of conservative Dems abandoning the values the party is supposed to represent. We need strong Democrats like Ed Fallon fighting for what's right and ensuring that we progressives have a voice inside the halls of Congress.

It's Time to Help Elect Fallon

The primary is just around the corner and no one knows how this race is going to turn out. The bloggers of EENR have set up an Act Blue page and we'd love it if you could throw him some change in the final weeks of his campaign. If you live in Iowa, please consider volunteering for Ed Fallon. We need to do everything we can to send him to Congress!!

Ed Fallon will be here to talk to YOU

In less than two hours Ed Fallon will be here to have a conversation with us. I hope you'll join us and give a warm welcome fellow progressive Ed Fallon.

Thank you for the heads up, Sarah (3.00 / 4)
And thanks to Ed Fallon for coming to EENR to blog with us.

It will be his first visit to EENR (3.00 / 4)
I'm excited to talk to him about his race. I really hope he can pull out an upset.

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

Thanks to EENR! (3.00 / 6)
Thanks for the opportunity to exchange ideas today.  I'm very glad to be here.

So true! (3.00 / 4)
Over the years we've learned that we can't depend on Democrat Leonard Boswell to protect our rights to privacy or spend our tax dollars the way they should be spent. We need to replace him with a strong progressive that has a backbone. There's no doubt in my mind that Fallon is that candidate.

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

[ Parent ]
We're glad to have you! (3.00 / 4)
We need your voice in Congress Ed. If anyone feels compelled to throw Ed some change, we bloggers at EENR started an Act Blue for Fallon.

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

I just got called to attend a 1 PM meeting (EDT) (3.00 / 4)
so would someone ask Ed Fallon this for me, please?

Mr. Fallon, would you describe yourself as more of a pragmatist or more of a populist regarding legislation, and please tell us why you feel that way?

I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends... that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.
Adlai Stevenson

Populist/Pragmatist (3.00 / 6)
I believe being a populist is a very pragmatic thing.  Pragmatism, to my way of thinking, means being sincerely committed to getting things done.  The corporate friendly, DNC approach to appeasement on the critical issues will never accomplish real change for most Americans.

[ Parent ]
Thank you, Mr. Fallon. (3.00 / 4)
I appreciate that answer.

I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends... that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.

[ Parent ]
What is your position on impeachment of Cheney & Bush? (3.00 / 4)

Impeachment (3.00 / 5)
I want to give Bush and Cheney credit--they've earned the right to be impeached.  It's too bad Democrats didn't stand up sooner to make this happen.  I certainly would have supported such efforts.

[ Parent ]
Thank you so much for that answer (3.00 / 4)

[ Parent ]
Oh Snap! (3.00 / 4)
Great answer.

hi Ed! (3.00 / 4)
Do you have any special GOTV or other campaign events planned for Memorial Day weekend?

Join the Iowa progressive community at  Bleeding Heartland.

GOTV & Events (3.00 / 5)
We certainly do have many volunteer shifts to fill for GOTV.  We give everyone Sundays off, but we will be working Sunday, June 1st.  We also want to recognize the significance of Memorial Day, but we will need volunteers to prep and distribute fliers and make phone calls.  Contact Emily at emily@fallonforcongress.com or 515-277-0424 if you would like to volunteer.

We also have an "Empty Chair Forum" at the Historical Building in Des Moines in order to speak with voters who are frustrated that there will be no debate.  We will also have a strong presence at the Farmer's Market on May 31st.

[ Parent ]
which Congressional committees (3.00 / 4)
would you want to join if elected to the House?

Join the Iowa progressive community at  Bleeding Heartland.

Committees (3.00 / 5)
Energy & Commerce, Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, and Government Oversight and Reform. I'm still thinking about another one.

[ Parent ]
On energy, what is your position as to (3.00 / 4)
bioethanol made from food sources, nuclear energy and clean coal?

[ Parent ]
Very good question (3.00 / 4)
I would also like to hear Fallon's views on nuclear and coal. And...as an addendum, how we're going to deal with the food crisis partially caused by corn production set aside for bio-fuels.

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

[ Parent ]
Bio-fuels (3.00 / 3)
Corn-based ethanol has its problems, but driving up food prices is not one of them.  The vast majority of corn is not being used for food directly, but is being used for feed.  High food prices have a lot more to do with high gas prices than it does with corn.

The by-product of corn-based ethanol production is also used as feed.  That said, I do believe we need to broaden the base of crop products available for ethanol production.  Most important, we need to develop local sources for food production which uses a lot less fuel in transport.

[ Parent ]
I understand your answer int hat you are (3.00 / 2)
running in Iowa, but I do disagree on this.

[ Parent ]
Coal (3.00 / 4)
Unlike Congressman Boswell, I am vocally opposed to building coal plants--two of which are proposed on the edges of Iowa's 3rd District.  I was quoted in the paper recently stating that if coal interests want to research clean coal technology and carbon sequestration they, not the tax-payers, should fund the research.

[ Parent ]
But what about biofuels from foodstuffs and nuclear energy? (3.00 / 2)

[ Parent ]
Nuclear (3.00 / 4)
Nuclear energy is a problem for three reasons:
1.  The tremendous cost of building a plant.
2.  The inability to safely store nuclear waste for an extended period of time.
3.  The risk of both another accident of plutonium being used in weapons production.

[ Parent ]
Good, but what about bioethanol from food products? (3.00 / 2)

[ Parent ]
Bioethanol from food products (3.00 / 3)
This isn't really the issue in Iowa as nearly all of our corn is used for feed.  If its an issue elsewhere, I'm happy to learn more about it.

[ Parent ]
It´s an issue in that growing food crops to produce energy (3.00 / 2)
IS now increasingly being recognized as the wrong way to go. Growing food crops to produce energy has been and is adding to global starvation. While you say that the corn in IA is used to feed cattle, it is part of the same problem, i.e. a less effective use of food products. But am glad to hear that you want to learn more about this issue. There have been many good diaries on the issue here at EENR.

[ Parent ]
Ed..I live in Nancy Pelosi's District (3.00 / 4)
Not only did she take Impeachment off the Table for Bush/Cheney, she also seems unable to bring about an end to this unjust War. Can we count on you to pursue a Progressive agenda instead of "Bi-Partisan" Capitulation?
Thanks,Ed

(-8.50/-7.44) "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." Dalai Lama

Progressive agenda (3.00 / 4)
The Progressive agenda is all I've ever fought for.  My track record in the Iowa legislature indicates that I've got the backbone to stand up to forces within the Democratic party that prefer equivocation over fighting hard for one's principles.

[ Parent ]
Ed, I believe it is essential to get ALL (3.00 / 4)
troops out of Iraq as soon as possible, but in no case, later than 2013.  I further believe this should specifically (date included) be a "plank" in the Democratic platform at the convention.  But I have my doubts that a date will be included.

I also have my doubts that Obama or Clinton or the Pelosi congress will actually bring all troops out of Iraq.  It's the pessimist in me.

My question, if you're elected, will you support getting ALL troops out of Iraq by a date certain NLT 2013?

The function of man is to live, not to exist.
I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them.
I shall use my time.  Jack London

Troop Withdrawal (3.00 / 4)
I think we get the troops out of Iraq a lot sooner than 2013.  It didn't take us four years to bring them in.

When Democratic Presidential candidates were in Iowa, they talked about a plan for withdrawal that ranged from immediate to twelve months.  That seems like the more reasonable framework than 2013.

[ Parent ]
how confident are you (3.00 / 4)
that Leonard Boswell would respect the results of the primary if you win?

As far as I am aware, he has not promised to support the winner of the primary.

Join the Iowa progressive community at  Bleeding Heartland.

desmoinesdem, how could any`Democrat do that? (3.00 / 3)

[ Parent ]
Winning the primary! (3.00 / 5)
Boswell was just quoted in Cityview this week that he would support the Democratic candidate.

[ Parent ]
thanks--I hadn't seen (3.00 / 4)
the new Cityview yet.

Ed..Healthcare (3.00 / 3)
As someone living with HIV and a Stroke Survivor who lost his Job because of that, do you plan on assuring that accessible Healthcare will be a Priority for ALL americans?
Thanks,Ed

(-8.50/-7.44) "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." Dalai Lama

Healthcare (3.00 / 5)
I lived for 15 years without any health insurance myself, so I am painfully aware how important it is to have a universal health care system.  Our system doesn't need another bandaid, it needs an overhaul.  Medicare is a good starting point.

[ Parent ]
Medcare WAS a starting point but what is your endpoint? (3.00 / 3)

[ Parent ]
Understanding that fact is oh so Important (3.00 / 3)
My 78 yo Mom reports that Medicare Part D for Pharmaceuticals is a nightmare and she cannot afford to buy all the Medicines she requires. do you envision an overhaul of that?
Thanks,Ed

(-8.50/-7.44) "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." Dalai Lama

[ Parent ]
Medicare (3.00 / 3)
I meant the Medicare for All Act which has wide support in Congress.

[ Parent ]
But are you going to fight for UHC for all? (3.00 / 3)

[ Parent ]
Great Ed..because that is what this Country needs (3.00 / 4)
Instead of spending Trillions of Dollars on Faux Wars and Killing people. We also need an end to spineless Congressional Representatives who continue to Fund this travesty.
I'll be voting for Nancy Pelosi's Primary Opponent in CA-08, on June 3rd,  to make that Point.
All my best to you.
Regards,Ed

(-8.50/-7.44) "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." Dalai Lama

[ Parent ]
Thanks (3.00 / 5)
I really appreciate those of you who are able to send a donation, since I don't take PAC money or lobbyist money, raising funds is the biggest challenge I face between now and June 3rd.  The more I can raise from the Progressive grassroots around the country, the better my chances of winning on June 3rd.

[ Parent ]
Pharmaceuticals (3.00 / 5)
Yes, I do envision an overhaul of that.  The Pharmaceuticals plan needs to be made a true Medicare low-cost program, rather than Bush's for-profit scheme that benefits private insurance and pharmaceutical companies.  Note, Boswell was one of only 9 Democrats AND the deciding vote in support of Bush's plan.

[ Parent ]
Boswell was the deciding vote ! (3.00 / 3)
After I send my Mom some $$, you'll be receiving same. That plan was and is insane.
Boswell-d needs to go!

[ Parent ]
Thanks for being here... (3.00 / 4)
An important aspect to stabilizing our economy is creating good paying jobs. It seems as though many of our fellow Dems and Republicans think tax rebates is the answer to stabilizing our economy. What steps would you support to try and get us out of the recession we're in?

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

Economy (3.00 / 5)
As I said in a Letter to the Editor to the Des Moines Register recently, the economic stimulus package is more of an economic stimulus for the Chinese economy than our own.  Ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are an important first step in restoring the possibility of restoring fiscal solvency.  Repealing the Bush tax-cuts would help, ending corporate give-aways, such as the $14.5 billion in tax incentives to utility companies in the 2005 energy bill.  In general, we need to make our tax structure more Progressive.

[ Parent ]
Are you disappointed... (3.00 / 4)
in Obama and Edwards for not actively supporting you in this primary?  What are the odds of Edwards endorsing you before the primary?

Endorsements (3.00 / 6)
I would love to have the endorsement of John Edwards and Barack Obama and have pursued that possibility with John Edwards.  I'm not sure anything will happen on that front.

[ Parent ]
Well... (3.00 / 5)
this Edwards supporter is behind you 100%! I do wish some of my fellow Democratic leaders would be bold and support the right candidates for office. You fit the mold and deserve the support of Edwards and Obama.

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

[ Parent ]
One more question.... (3.00 / 4)
Recently we found out the Pentagon's plans to build a massive resort in the green zone in Baghdad. What are your feelings about that? Do you think all American contractors should be out of Iraq when the troops leave?

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

Resort? (3.00 / 5)
This is the first I've heard of this.  It almost seems like something from a bad movie.

Are there tax dollars involved in this resort?  Who's likely to get the contract?  And who the heck is likely to take a week's vacation at a resort in Baghdad?  That's got to be a pretty short list.  And yes, if you mean all military contractors out of Iraq by the time the troops leave that makes sense to me.

[ Parent ]
Well... (3.00 / 4)
they say it's going to cost 5 billion dollars. Many private investors are already jumping in on it, Marriott Hotels are supposed to build a hotel and a private investor in L.A. might be building a theme park. It's so shameful. We can't even supply running water and electricity in Iraq, yet we build a 700 million dollar embassy and are trying to make Baghdad the next Beirut.

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

[ Parent ]
It already is the next Beirut, Sarah (3.00 / 4)
circa 1975 - 1990 Civil War Beirut, that is.

What absolute monsters these profit hungry Neo-Cons are.

I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends... that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.
Adlai Stevenson

[ Parent ]
Baghdad (3.00 / 5)
As someone who lived in poverty for many years, I find it obscene that this would even be proposed.

[ Parent ]
Ed, there are a few questions upstream that you may not (3.00 / 2)
have noticed? Those deal with your energy policy positions and healthcare. Thanks.

One more question... (3.00 / 4)
How do you feel about the race right now? How is the feeling on the ground in Iowa?

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

Race right now (3.00 / 6)
Yesterday for example, we had over 2200 phone calls and door knocks.  We're doing really well, our own internal polling shows us up.

[ Parent ]
Keep up the good work!! (3.00 / 5)
If you're trending the right way, that's a very good sign! Keep making those calls and door knocks, it can be quite tedious but it's so important.

Netroots Director for Oregon Senate Candidate Jeff Merkley

[ Parent ]
What do you feel the US Military role should be in Afghanistan (3.00 / 4)
considering we do begin drawing down troops from Iraq?

Bring most troops home, and some to fight the Taliban and Al Queda, most to transfer to Afghanistan and complete this mission, or just bring 'em all home?

I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends... that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.
Adlai Stevenson

Afghanistan (3.00 / 5)
I appreciate the multiple choice question, but I need to think about this more.

[ Parent ]
Thats fair (3.00 / 4)

I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends... that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.

Ed (3.00 / 4)
What do you think of elected officials in Congress already warning us that Universal Health Care will not be possible no matter what the next President does?

How can we change this perception and what do you plan on doing to help push for UHC?

Thank yoU!

Mr. Ellinorianne for CA State Senate! (Gary Pritchard ActBlue CA-SD-33)

UHC (3.00 / 6)
We have to get Universal Health Care.  The crisis is only going to get worse.  The current system is not only bad for people, it's bad for most businesses.

In 16 years of politics I've never taken money from PAC's or paid-lobbyists.  A big part of the problem in fighting for UHC is the prevalence of drug and insurance company money in politics.  Like John Edwards, I'm running my campaign without PAC and lobbyist money, and am committed to fighting for real campaign finance reform, ie. the Durbin-Specter bill.

[ Parent ]
One more question :) (3.00 / 4)
My husband is running for State Senate in California.  What do you plan to do for down ticket races and helping other Democrats get elected in your area?

Mr. Ellinorianne for CA State Senate! (Gary Pritchard ActBlue CA-SD-33)

Dems (3.00 / 5)
I'm certainly willing to dove-tail my campaign with campaigns of other Progressive Democrats in this district.  Over the years, I've helped probably 30-40 other Progressive Democratic candidates for a variety of offices.

[ Parent ]
Thank you for that (3.00 / 5)
We have an uphill battle and Republicans have said my husband is "irrelevant".  It saddens me to think that a good guy standing up to put a "D" on the ballot could be called irrelevant.  I really hope their hubris bites them you know where :)

Mr. Ellinorianne for CA State Senate! (Gary Pritchard ActBlue CA-SD-33)

[ Parent ]
Ed, I wish you the best of luck (3.00 / 6)
I just got paid and will make a little donation. Thanks for running. That's a major investment in sweat.

Methane is carbon dioxide on steroids, and global warming is uncapping a methane soda bottle in the subsea Arctic.

Thank you! (3.00 / 6)
For your donation and for supporting a Progressive grassroots campaign.

[ Parent ]
Just wondering when folks will make the connection (3.00 / 4)
that the ads they see on TV is funded by the special interests that work against them. Do you help try to make that connection for people you speak before?

Methane is carbon dioxide on steroids, and global warming is uncapping a methane soda bottle in the subsea Arctic.

[ Parent ]
I want to thank you very much for coming here, Ed (3.00 / 5)
And while I have posed some tough questions and we may not agree on all of the answers, you seem open to dialogue on those questions too. I have yet to meet a politician I totally agree with. I will support you in your effort to be "our" representative from IA (I´m from TX so need all the help I can get as far as representation goes).

I know we're almost out of time... (3.00 / 6)
Thanks to the EENR community to having me.  I appreciate this opportunity to dialogue.  I've learned a few new things and look forward to continued discussion about ethanol, health care, and luxury resorts in Baghdad.  This campaign has been very intense, very heated, I really feel it's going our way.  At the Obama rally two days ago in Des Moines where 7,000 people showed up, my staff, volunteers and I got a great response from the thousands of people we had contact with. Progressives can win the seat and your support at this time, especially financial, is critical.  Thanks.  If I've missed any of your questions please direct them to www.fallonforcongress.com and I will do my best to answer them.

Thank you, Ed, for stopping by and spending quality time with us here. (3.00 / 4)
Best of luck with your campaign.

I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends... that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.

Thank YOU, Ed (3.00 / 3)
We need people like you to stand up for US and I will be supporting you.
