Got ID?

by: sarahlane

It's primary day in Indiana and folks are being turned away from the polls because they don't have a state issued photo id. From veterans to nuns, these Indiana residents are not being allowed to vote because of the new voter i.d. law in Indiana held up by the Supreme Court last week.

In South Bend Indiana, 12 nuns were turned away from the polls today because they either had expired passports or did not have a current photo i.d. Most of the women were in their 80's and 90's and did not drive.

A veteran named Russell Baughman who had served in three conflicts was turned away from the polls in the March special election. He had his voter registration card, his expired driver's license and his veterans affairs card. It wasn't good enough.

A student at St. Mary's college did not a chance to vote for the first time in her life because she only had her college photo i.d. I'm glad we're making her first voting experience such a joy.

I'm sure the Republicans who continually try to suppress the vote are happy. Job well done.

The funny thing about the nuns (3.00 / 8)
They were turned away by a fellow nun from their order. In other words, registered voters were turned away by their own sister.

I know... (3.00 / 7)
it's just horrible. Can we really expect women or men in their 90's to go through the trouble of getting a new id, let alone paying for it?

i hope someone sends the nuns article to the 5 practicing Catholics... (3.00 / 6)
on the SCOTUS... which in an ironic twist, all voted to uphold...

for the record, those nun vote-depriving Catholics would be:

Roberts

Scalia

Alito

Thomas

and Kennedy.

This is one I agree with the courts on. (3.00 / 3)
I know that isn't a popular stand, but I do.

Republican = anti-voter (3.00 / 7)

It's worth noting... (3.00 / 7)
that the Supreme Court believed there were tens of thousands of Indiana residents without government issued photo id when they upheld the law. There is an article out today in Milwaukee Magazine that talks about a study done in Wisconsin. Here's a snippet:

The study found 14 percent of Wisconsin residents - 558,000 people - lack a driver's license or state-issued photo ID. If that percentage held true in Indiana, some 620,000 citizens would lack the requisite ID. But Stevens' decision ignored the research.

i would call that dereliction of duty... they are supposed to be... (3.00 / 7)
upholding the constitution, right?

I simply cannot type this enough (3.00 / 7)

They aren't happy.  They are friggin' estatic!  They are dancing in the streets every time someone is turned away from a polling place!

WE MUST TAKE BACK THE WHITE HOUSE IN NOVEMBER

The Supreme Court has weighed in on two voter issues since 2000.  So far they have appointed George W. Bush the Dictator of the USA and have allowed voter supression with their upholding of the Republican ID law.

We desperately need a President that will appoint Justices that will do what the American people want them to do, not what the American corporations want them to do.

I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends... that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.
Adlai Stevenson

This is one of the reasons why, no matter who (3.00 / 4)
becomes our candidate, I'll have to vote for our nominee in November. I've thought of doing a write in or only voting down ticket but then stuff like this happens and I realize why I have no other choice.

I work for a local government and just last week we got a memo from our Human Resources dept. that some of us employees would have to submit proof of our eligibility to work - required info from the Dept. of Homeland Security. Apparently the proof that I gave them over 18 years ago was no longer proof enough. Yes, I was furious and let my displeasure be known. What the (swear word) has happened to this country?

I founded the business for which I work (3.00 / 3)
and have been employed by the same place more than 20 years.  Yet I, too, was forced to supply documentation of my citizenship and right to work here.  Homeland Security has little better to do than generate too much paperwork for small businesses these days.  Nothing about securing the nation, just securing their jobs.  I am angry beyond belief.

Peace.

Unbelievable. (3.00 / 3)
I was sorely tempted to see what would happen if I refused to provide the info but the need to keep my job/insurance/retirement won out in the end. You are so right about them not securing the nation - not when they spend so much of their resources checking on us. I share your anger and I'm sure many others do, also.

I am an elected Central Committee Member here in Stark County, Ohio. (3.00 / 3)
You say ..."Ohio, that's voter fraud country."

Listen up class:
I get up early, at least two days out of every year, and drag my lazy procrastinating Jacksonian butt down to my polling place...it is my job, you know.

I don't get to watch all day, but my Poll Capt. knows, if you produce, so much as, a utility bill with your name and address inside our Precint limits, you will receive no less than a paper provisional ballot and you will allowed under Ohio Law to cast that ballot.

Voter fraud/supression just makes me sick! Stay on their azzez, sarahlane!

And they said it didn't place a burden... (3.00 / 2)
Well, it's no burden if your wealthy or you're young enough to make the trip down to the BMV and survive it.  But for everyone else, it's a burden.  Fuckers.
